More about supporting healthy skin…
Within the past few years, there has been nothing short of a revolution in natural skin care products. Unlike their old-fashioned counterparts, which primarily cover up problems, these new cutting-edge products seek to enhance the health and quality of skin where possible.
In fact, many (including our Chickweed Herb Cream) actually contain some of the same vitamins, minerals and antioxidants that can be taken internally, but are re-designed to be absorbed right into the skin, where they are needed most.
Some interesting facts about skin
Skin is the largest organ in the body – it makes up about 10% of our body weight – and it is one of the hardest working. Skin provides cover and protection for our internal organs, is essential for the production and storage of vitamin D and works with the immune system to keep unwanted viruses, bacteria and other pathogens out of the body. In addition, skin helps us to maintain our body temperature and to retain blood and other body fluids.
The ageing process
Unlike other organs in the body, skin is constantly exposed to the environment. As a result, it eventually begins to show signs of wear and tear as we age. Skin consists of 2 layers: the outer layer (epidermis) and the inner layer (dermis). The dermis is made up mainly of collagen, the tissue that provides the “scaffolding” that supports the outer layer of cells that form the epidermis.
Several factors cause skin to age, but two of the primary reasons that skin begins to look older is a dramatic decline in collagen production in midlife, along with exposure to free radicals from (for instance) UV rays, pollution, smoking, illness and a poor diet lacking in antioxidants.
As we get older, skin becomes drier because we lose cells that help the skin to retain moisture; in fact, skin loses about 30% of its water content. Similarly, while our body’s natural antioxidant defence network deactivates some free radicals before they can inflict harm and damage cells, antioxidant levels also decline as we age.
The best way to maintain youthful, healthy skin is to look after it – both from within and without!
More about the ingredients in our Chickweed Herb Cream
Antioxidants: This chickweed herb cream contains a range of antioxidants, such as vitamin C and Panax ginseng, for that extra silky, soft and smooth feeling. Antioxidants help to support and protect the body against the harmful effects of free radicals, often associated with cell damage and the ageing process.
Aloe vera (Aloe barbadensis): One key way to maintain healthy skin is to replenish lost moisture. Drinking 8 glasses of filtered water daily is one way to make sure that your body is well hydrated. Using a good moisturiser, such as aloe vera, can also help your skin to hold on to moisture. Aloe vera is a spiky cactus-like plant of the lily family, which contains 18 amino acids and vitamins. Aloe also contains natural moisturisers called mucopolysaccharides, which are similar to the moisturising cells found in the dermis that help to retain moisture. It can also help to soothe irritated skin.
Burdock (Arctium lappa): Also known as Beggar’s buttons, burdock is a herb which contains fatty acids, organic acids, phenolic acids, lignans, sesquiterpenes, tannin, mucilage, inulin, iron, sulphur and B-vitamins.
Chamomile (Anthemis nobilis): Proper cleansing is essential for glowing, healthy skin. Too often, however, people make the mistake of over-cleansing: they use harsh detergent-like or abrasive products that are not only irritating, but actually strip the skin of important oils. Chamomile is a wonderful gentle cleanser that is usually tolerated by even the most sensitive of skins. This chickweed combination herb cream includes Roman chamomile flowers, containing sesquiterpene lactones and flavonoids.
Chickweed (Stellaria media): Chickweed herb enjoys a reputation as a traditional “helper” for a wide range of skin conditions, including rough, dry, itchy and/or angry skin. It contains saponin, glycosides, coumarins, flavonoids and is a source of vitamin C. As such, it is widely used by naturopaths and herbalists for many skin complaints, including eczema.
Lavender (Lavendula vera): Lavender flowers contain flavonoids, coumarins, triterpenes and volatile oil.
