Every girl’s favorite designer, Vera Wang is celebrating her birthday today, and what better way to pay homage to the wedding doyenne than with a retrospective of the ethereal dresses she’s created for stylish women across the worlds of politics, fashion, sports, and music.
Political daughters Chelsea Clinton and Ashley Biden both wore opulent designs with flourishing hemlines, while entrepreneur Ivanka Trump chose a frothy, lace confection with sheer sleeves. Model Lily Aldridge marked her big day with an easy strapless look that lent itself to the relaxed vibe of her wedding to Kings of Leon’s Caleb Followill.

But Wang’s most elaborate moments came in 1993 for the marriage of Mariah Carey to Tommy Mottola (her dress billowed so much it reportedly required six assistants to hold the train) and then again in 1999 with Victoria and David Beckham‘s wedding (Beckham’s dress was shipped back and forth across the pond several times to be fitted).

For musicians Avril Lavigne, Hilary Duff, and Alicia Keys (who was sporting a tiny baby bump), Wang designed diaphanous dresses fit for rock royalty.

However, the most rebellious Wang bride in the bunch was Shenae Grimes, who embraced the designer’s fall 2012 collection of darkly tinged looks and gave stylish new meaning to the phrase the bride wore black.
